High Areal Energy Density: Compact and Safe
Although lithium-ion batteries have an average energy density of 34 kWh/m², safety regulations require significant spacing between units, increasing their overall footprint. In contrast, flow batteries, with non-flammable electrolytes, can be vertically scaled. For example, with an 8-meter tank, flow batteries can achieve up to 50 kWh/m², offering similar capacity but with a much smaller footprint, making them ideal for space-constrained installations​.

Flow batteries use non-flammable aqueous electrolytes, eliminating the fire risks associated with lithium-ion batteries.
